| Newcastle International airport serves millions of passengers each year flying to North America, Europe, UK and North Africa.
Newcastle Airport opened in July 1935. The airport cost £35,000 to build and was literally a grass runway, clubhouse, hanger, workshops and a garage. The runway lights were made up of a series of empty oil drums that could be filled with oil rags and lit in advance of an approaching aircraft!
Newcastle International Airport acquired Samson Aviation Services Ltd, the private aviation business situated on the south side of the airport site. The deal formed part of Newcastle International’s wider plans to redevelop the entire south side of the airport, including the creation of a luxury £20m business park and the extension of Newcastle College’s Aviation Academy.
